Colour: Vivid orange to red, strongly pleochroic
Formation: Grows as needle-like prismatic crystals, so fast it often can't fill itself in, leaving the tips hollow, like tiny glass tubes. It needs two rare ingredients, lead and chromium, to leach into the same ground at the same time, which is part of why it almost never happens.
Origin: Dundas, Tasmania; the Ural Mountains, Russia; Brazil
Cultural: Name from the Greek krokos, meaning saffron, given for the intensity of its colour. Chromium was isolated from the mineral in 1797, three decades after its discovery in Russia. Tasmania's Dundas field later produced the brittle orange-red needles that made the mineral famous, and the state named it its official emblem in 2000.
