TULSI
From Ayurvedic Ritual to Modern Skincare
Tulsi made its way from the wilderness to the home centuries ago. Grown beside homes, tended in courtyards and honoured through devotional practice, this aromatic herb belongs equally to the world of plant medicine. Ayurveda treasures Tulsi as an adaptogen, traditionally taken to support the body through periods of stress, while its leaves also have a long history of topical use. Today, that same plant intelligence is finding expression in contemporary skincare.

Botanical Identity

Plant family: Lamiaceae
Plant part used: Leaf
Common names / varieties: Holy basil (Tulsi), - Rama, Krishna, Vana, Kapoor, Amrita
Origin: Indian subcontinent, now cultivated throughout South and Southeast Asia

Tulsi holds Rasayana status within Ayurveda, a specialised branch of traditional Ayurvedic medicine focused on rejuvenation, vitality, resilience and healthy ageing. Its place extends beyond the dispensary. Tulsi plants are traditionally grown within household courtyards, where tending the plant becomes part of daily devotional life. During Tulsi Vivah, the plant is ceremonially united with Vishnu, revealing the depth of reverence surrounding a herb that is also prepared as medicine.
Rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, Tulsi helps calm irritation, defend against environmental stress and support the skin’s natural resilience.

Plant Intelligence
The secret medicine
Adaptogens help the body maintain resilience through periods of physical or emotional pressure. Tulsi is one of Ayurveda’s best-known examples, traditionally valued for supporting equilibrium across the body. Skin responds to many of the same pressures, including inflammation, environmental exposure and oxidative stress, giving Tulsi a natural place within contemporary botanical skincare.
Skin
Eugenol, rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid help calm inflammation, defend against oxidative stress and support skin resilience.
Sensory
Tulsi is green and peppered with clove-like warmth, softened within Shemana’s solar-infused jojoba by Schisandra and Rose.
Systems
Ayurveda uses Tulsi to support the stress response and nervous system balance, reflecting its enduring association with steadiness and adaptive capacity.
Its leaves have long been steeped as infusions and applied to the skin, weaving internal wellbeing and topical care into the same botanical tradition.

Plant Wisdom
Metaphoric Principle –
The plant as a teacher
Revered as a sacred plant and kept close to the home and heart, Tulsi carries a teaching in what we choose to tend. Our attention and devotion shape what grows within our lives, inviting us to give our energy to the people, practices and places that honour and nourish us.
Energetic Signature —
The vibrational imprint
Energetically, Tulsi represents a bridge between the earthly and the sacred, inviting us to approach our own lives with greater reverence. Its medicine is one of devotion: to recognise what is sacred, honour it through our attention, and allow everyday practice to become a pathway toward deeper connection.

Within Shemana
Why we chose this plant
Every botanical within a Shemana formulation is chosen for more than its chemistry alone. We look for plants whose traditional use, energetic signature and biological activity complement one another, creating formulations where each ingredient contributes to the intelligence of the whole.
Tulsi was chosen for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and adaptogenic qualities, alongside the steadiness and resilience it has represented for generations. It is blended with Jiaogulan, Schisandra, Calendula, Centella, Rose and Marshmallow Root, then solar-infused together in organic jojoba for up to two months. The seven herbs steep as one, creating a symbiotic harmony of chemistry, energy and story.
Illume Phyto-Active Cleansing Oil introduces the infusion at the beginning of the facial ritual, cleansing while leaving the skin comfortable and conditioned.
Immortal Skin Elixir carries the botanical infusion into a concentrated daily facial oil created to support resilient, well-conditioned skin.
Golden Age Beauty Balm brings Tulsi into the final layer of the Phyto-Nutrient Skin System, enveloping the skin in our herbal infusion alongside regenerative botanical oils.
Alchemy Body & Bath Oil extends the same plant infusion across the body, where warm oil and aromatic botanicals turn everyday application into a slower sensory practice.

Tulsi reminds us that what we tend becomes part of us. Through attention and care, ordinary moments become meaningful rituals.
