Shemana Mists contain the non-toxic preservative Phenoxyethanol. A preservative widely used in skincare, which is known as "nature identical" because it mimics the natural version found in plants like green tea and chicory. Phenoxyethanol is a broad-spectrum preservative that prevents the growth of harmful microorganisms such as yeast, mold, and bacteria, which can otherwise contaminate products and potentially cause infections on the skin. By doing so, phenoxyethanol significantly extends the shelf life of skincare products, making them safer and more effective over time.

When used in concentrations of less than 1% (which is what all Shemana Mists contain) phenoxyethanol is considered safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) and many regulatory bodies. While there are studies that suggest phenoxyethanol can cause irritation, these findings are typically based on much higher concentrations than what is in our Mists. In small, controlled amounts, this preservative is both beneficial and necessary to maintain product stability. 

Importantly, phenoxyethanol is viewed as a safer alternative to preservatives like parabens and formaldehyde, which have been linked to more serious health concerns, such as hormone disruption. While phenoxyethanol is generally considered non-toxic, individuals with sensitive skin or those prone to irritation are encouraged to perform a patch test before using products containing this ingredient, ensuring they won't have an adverse reaction.
